1. The web dashboard

This is the simplest place to start, and it works on a phone as well as a computer. Create an account, add credit, type or paste your numbers and write your message. The screen shows how many parts it uses and what it will cost, so nothing comes as a surprise. If you only send now and then, you may never need anything else. See bulk SMS for what the campaign tools can do.

2. An Excel or CSV upload

If your people are already in a spreadsheet, upload it instead of typing. Extra columns become merge fields, so a fee balance or a member name can be different in every message. The guide to bulk SMS from Excel walks through it step by step.

3. The HTTP API

When your own software should send the message, such as an order update or an account alert, use the SMS API. It takes one HTTPS request. Sign-in codes have their own Verify API, which also checks the code. Test keys let a developer build all of this without sending or spending anything.

4. An SMPP bind

If you run a messaging platform, you probably want an SMPP bind. It keeps a connection open between your system and the gateway, and it is the only route here that also reaches other African countries.

Before your first send

  • Check your numbers. Airtel and TNM numbers both work. Read how Malawi numbers are written if your list looks messy.
  • Choose your name. A sender ID shows people who is texting. Request it early, because it has to be approved first.
  • Check the length. You pay K20 per part. The SMS counter shows the parts before you send.
  • Send to yourself first. Put your own number on a small list and read the message on a real phone.

Questions

Can I send SMS to Malawi from another country?

Yes. The dashboard and the API work from anywhere with internet access. The number you send to must be a Malawi number (+265).

Do I need a contract to start?

You can sign up online and start on the dashboard or with a test key. SMPP binds are set up with you directly, because they need your volumes and IP addresses.

How do I pay?

SMS YANU is prepaid. Top up with Airtel Money, TNM Mpamba or card from your account, or by bank transfer or mobile money with a reference that staff approve.
